Poon's Hoobie debut, "Poontunes," is now available, 25 tracks of artistically challenged depravity! Poon is scheduled to return to Fortune Puppy Studios in 2008 to begin recording their follow-up album, "Poontronik."
It started in the early 1960’s when Richard & Harriette Poon started a Pentecostal music ministry, aptly named Poon, to reach out to the nation’s youth and drug culture. During those turbulent times Poon recorded their debut album, entitled “Holy Spirit High,” which was regarded as a joke by secular audiences and a musical disaster by Christian audiences. By the early 1970’s both Richard and Harriette had a falling out with their Pentecostal church and joined the Peoples Temple, founded by the notorious Jim Jones. It was at this time that they had two sons, Harold and Chubby. Both Richard and Harriette continued with their musical endevours as Poon changed their style, as instructed by Jim Jones, and released a disco ablum, entitled “Poon on the Dance Floor!,” which again received horrible reviews. After this disappointment, the Poon family left Jim Jones and joined Heaven's Gate, a “U.F.O. religious cult,” whose members committed a mass suicide in 1997.
As their sons grew, they were encouraged to take up instruments and by the early 1980’s both Harold and Chubby joined Poon as active members. By the mid 80’s Poon’s popularity was at an all time low as their musical repertoire consisted of Michael Jackson cover songs and the featured “Poon Walk” (a obvious rip-off of a “Moon Walk”) on stage. The two teenage sons now disgusted by their musical direction and parents behaviour kicked both Richard and Harriette out of the band.
Poon as we know them today was born when the brothers changed musical direct yet again. They became an underground heavy metal legend, when they self released a demo cassette entitled “Head Banging Poon”. The 90’s were more challenging for Poon, they experimented with grunge, death metal, industrial, techno, and easy listening but couldn’t seem to find a following. Then, in 1997 their mother and father were among the dead found at the mass suicide at the Heaven’s Gate mansion. Poon decided to take a musical break, laying dorment for nearly 10 years. Finally they make their triumphant return on Hoobie Records!
